Platinum One Hundred Dollar Coins
A popular platinum one hundred dollar coin is the uncirculated Platinum American Eagle.
Others include the Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf, the Australian Platinum Koala as well as the discontinued Russian Ballet series issued originally by the Soviet Union and then later by the Russian Federation. The British Royal Mint also produces Platinum Britannia bullion coin. But the only $100 coin the USA Mint has ever issued is the one ounce platinum bullion coin.
These have been made since 1999 and there has never been any other US Coin with a $100 denomination. They are mainly made for precious metal dealers and sold in an uncirculated finish. Also sold by the USA Mint in a Proof finish.
The American Eagle Platinum Uncirculated Coin is struck on specially burnished blanks. The coins have a similar finish to their bullion coin counterparts and are available in four sizes, one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce, as well as a four-coin set which containing one coin of each denomination. Also each coin bears the “W” mint mark.
Each 2008 American Eagle Platinum Proof or Uncirculated Coin is encapsulated in plastic, packaged in a protective presentation case and accompanied by a custom-designed Certificate of Authenticity and contains 99.95 percent pure platinum. Only 6000 coins were struck in the proof version but 16,000 were struck for the 2008 $100 USA American Eagle Platinum Proof One Ounce Coin. However the mint no longer has any as they were quickly sold out so one would have to locate a coin dealer who has some to acquire any.
All the USA struck platinum coins have USA Dollar value stamped on them to validate and confirm them as official USA tender. Of course the value of the precious metal, in this case platinum, is always higher than the face value stamped. So although a one ounce platinum coin has the highest face value of one hundred dollars, the highest ever to appear on a USA coin, the amount of platinum determines the value of the coin, not the face stamped value.
Furthermore, platinum is priced according to the current market “spot price” as well as including the premium per coin.
The American Platinum Eagle is the official platinum bullion coin of the United States. and is authorized by the United States Congress and backed by the United States Mint for weight and content.
Because it is be considered more a commodity platinum rather than a rare coin, the American Platinum Eagle can be placed in an Individual Retirement Account in the United States.
Collectibles such as rare coins and dolls are forbidden from being held in such an account. Evidently the United States Securities and Exchange Commission does not believe that the believes that the popular platinum one hundred dollar coin, the Platinum Eagle will not appreciate beyond its metal value.
